I only started really caring about this in my early thirties, but I wish I had done it sooner.
I faced (ha) so many skin challenges growing up; redness, dryness, acne on my face, chest and back and it wouldn’t go away. I had it from 12 to 30. While I washed and treated my face daily with whatever my dermatologist told me to, I was so focussed on drying my face out (that’s what three rounds of Accutane will do to you – eee), that I didn’t care much about nursing it back to health. By the way, the Accutane didn’t work. So once my skin finally did clear up (thanks, naturopathy), I decided it was time to start caring for it the way a grown up would. I could finally see my actual skin, and I wanted it to look young, clear, and smooth.
Today, I have a skincare routine that is simple and super effective. I’ve chosen to use an organic brand which hails from Canada. I’ve realized that I can certainly spend less on skincare products, but I’ve decided to invest in great product; my face looks better and feels better when I use something that is formulated specifically for my skin type and issues. I replenish product about twice a year, so while I pay more for it, I suppose it is amortized over months. And if you look at a $70 eye cream that lasts 6 months, that works out to $11.60 per month, or about 38 cents per day. I can totally afford that for nice, refreshed eyes. There’s your rationalization.
To figure out this routine, I went to a spa and had my skin analyzed. Many places will do this for you, it depends on what product line you like. Many department store beauty brands will do this for you; I chose a spa because I wanted them to see my skin up close and personal, and give me recommendations based on the brand I really wanted to use, Eminence Organic Skin Care.
So here’s what I do.
I wash my face in the morning and at night with:
Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser. I wet my face, massage a pea-sized drop into my face and rub around for about 30 seconds, getting all areas including around my nose and hairline and under my jaw. Then, I take a clean washcloth, wet it with cool water and wash everything away. I love this particular prodct becuase it has a nice, herbal and calming scent and it gives your face a nice little zing too, from the tea tree oil.
